1 wife, 2 brothers as husbands in this Himachal wedding

Over the past six years, five such marriages have happened in a village called Badhana. The leaders of the tribe say this tradition started thousands of years ago because it helped keep family land together and made life easier in their difficult, hilly environment.

Videos of the wedding have become very popular online, making more people curious about this old tradition. In this wedding, a woman named Sunita Chauhan married two brothers named Pradeep and Kapil Negi. The wedding had music, dancing, and fun celebrations, just like any other wedding.

The Hatti community lives in a hilly area near the border of two states, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. A few years ago, the government officially recognized the Hatti as a special tribe. Sunita and the two brothers said they all agreed to the marriage happily and without anyone forcing them.

Pradeep, who works for the government, said they decided together because they’re proud of their tradition. Kapil, who works in another country, said they want to support and care for Sunita as a family. Sunita, who is from a nearby village, said she understood and chose to do this willingly. Jodidara is a special kind of marriage where a woman marries two or more brothers.

This tradition started a long time ago to help families keep their land and stay close. It also helps brothers stay united and makes sure the family has enough people to work the land and stay safe in the tough, hilly places where they live. This kind of marriage, called polyandry, where one woman marries more than one man—usually brothers—used to happen a lot among the Hatti tribe.

Even though it’s rare now, it is still allowed by the laws in Himachal Pradesh. Two brothers from a special tribe in Himachal Pradesh, called the Hatti tribe, got married to the same woman in a rare kind of wedding called Jodidara. This wedding took place in a village called Shillai and lasted three days, starting on July 12. Many villagers came to see and celebrate.
