Red pandas mainly eat bamboo, just like giant pandas. But they are actually omnivores, which means they also eat fruits, insects, and bird eggs.
They have long, bushy tails that they wrap around themselves like a cozy blanket when they sleep, especially during cold mountain nights.
Their reddish-brown fur helps them hide in the trees of the Himalayas. It matches the moss and bark, so predators don’t easily see them.
Red pandas usually like to be alone, but they still talk to each other using squeals, tiny sounds, and by leaving smell marks to stay in touch.
When a red panda feels scared or threatened, it stands up on its back legs to look bigger and more intimidating, which is a cute way of protecting itself.
Red pandas aren’t actually related to giant pandas, even though they have the same name. They belong to their own special family called Ailuridae.
Red pandas have thick fur on the bottoms of their feet. This furry “boots” help keep their feet warm and help them grip cold tree branches so they don’t slip.
Red pandas are most active at dawn and dusk, which means they are awake mostly in the early morning and evening. During the day, they like to nap in the trees to stay out of the hot sun.
They are really good at climbing trees. They can even climb down headfirst because of their flexible ankles and special claws.
Mama red pandas usually have one or two baby pandas at a time. The babies stay safe in nests made in leafy tree hollows.
