The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, said he was very sad and upset about what happened. He shared his feelings on social media and said he was talking with the leaders working to help everyone affected.
The airplane left Ahmedabad at 1:39 pm and crashed just five minutes after taking off. This was a very serious accident, one of the worst in India in many years. A big airplane called a Boeing Dreamliner, flying from London to India, had an accident near the Ahmedabad airport just after it took off on Thursday. The plane had 242 people on board.
Sadly, only one person survived the crash. The plane was operated by two pilots, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kunder, along with 10 crew members. The chairman of Air India, N Chandrasekaran, expressed his sadness and said they are focused on helping the families of the people on the plane. They have set up a special center to support those affected.
Pictures from the crash site showed lots of smoke coming from the area. Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Bhupendra Patel, told officials to start rescue and medical aid immediately. He also ordered that a special road called a “green corridor” be made so the injured can be taken quickly to the hospital. The Minister of Civil Aviation, K Rammohan Naidu, said he was very upset and was watching everything closely.
He ordered rescue teams to work quickly to help the injured and to make sure everyone gets medical help. The airline, Air India, also said what happened. They explained that the plane left Ahmedabad at 1:38 pm with 242 people on board, including passengers from India, Britain, Canada, and Portugal. They also set up a phone number to help families and answer questions.
