A senior leader from the local government promised that those responsible for hurting police officers will be punished. Just a few weeks ago, in another part of the state, there was more fighting that caused three deaths and made many people lose their homes.
A leader named Suvendu Adhikari wanted to visit the area to see the damage and support the victims. He asked the police for permission to go and meet the people affected.
Some other political leaders are upset about the violence and want to stop the government meetings until the situation improves. The trouble started when some people in a neighborhood argued about opening a new shop. Things got worse when some people said their special place of worship was attacked.
The fighting got out of control, and groups of people threw stones at the police, who were trying to stop the trouble. The fighting happened in an area where both the Kolkata Police and West Bengal Police are responsible. Because of the trouble, shops and stores stayed closed the next morning. The police sent many officers to help keep order.
Some vehicles and bikes were damaged, and the police cleared the roads. They also told people not to gather in big groups to stay safe. The police said they caught 28 people from West Bengal Police and 12 people from Kolkata Police.
During the fighting, about a dozen police officers, including a high-ranking officer, got hurt. Several police reports were made about the violence. Although a police station is very close to where the fighting happened, some people said there weren’t enough police to stop the large crowd of hundreds of people.
