Heartfelt Tribute: KKR Honors Jota’s Memory After Tragic Loss

The cricket team from Kolkata also said they were very sad about losing Diogo Jota and his brother. They sent their love and sympathy to his family and friends. The organizers of a big soccer event called the Women’s European Championship will have a special moment of silence to honor Diogo Jota and his brother.

Jota also played for Portugal’s national team, earning 49 caps (which means he played in 49 matches) and scoring 14 goals. He made his first big appearance in 2019 and helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League twice, in 2019 and 2025. In September 2020, the famous team Liverpool paid a lot of money—about 41 million pounds—to bring Jota to their team, called Anfield. Over five years, he played a lot of games and scored many goals. He helped Liverpool win important trophies, like the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Carabao Cup.

Jota was often used as a super-sub, meaning he would come into the game to help score goals when needed. Diogo Jota, whose full name is Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, was born on December 4, 1996, in Porto, Portugal. He chose the nickname “Jota” (which sounds like the letter J in Portuguese) so people wouldn’t get confused with other players who had the last name Silva.

When he was young, he played football in places called Gondomar and Paços de Ferreira, and everyone saw he was very talented. Away from soccer, Jota kept his family life private. In June 2025, he married his partner Rute Cardoso, and they had three children: Dinis, Duarte, and a baby girl born in late 2024. Jota also loved playing video games, especially FIFA 21, and even created his own e-sports team called Luna Galaxy. During the pandemic, he streamed his games online on Twitch. Sadly, on July 3, 2025, Jota and his younger brother André Silva, who was also a footballer, died in a car accident in Spain. They were returning to catch a ferry when their car lost control after overtaking another vehicle and caught fire. Both brothers were only 28 and 25 years old. The news shocked everyone who loved football. Many teams and football organizations shared their sadness and paid tribute to them. Jota started playing professionally in 2014 at Paços de Ferreira. His skills helped him move to a big team called Atlético Madrid in 2016. But he didn’t stay there long; he was loaned (which means he temporarily played) for a while at Porto and later at Wolverhampton Wanderers, a team in England. At Wolves, Jota really shined—he scored many goals and helped the team get promoted to the Premier League, which is the biggest soccer league in England. He was also important in helping Wolves do really well in other tournaments. People remember Jota for working very hard, pressing opponents, and being very good at finishing his shots. His coach, Jurgen Klopp, said he was very effective, especially when coming off the bench. His friends say he was professional and dedicated.
