Trump gives Russia 50-day deadline

The day before, Trump also announced that the U.S. will send really good weapons, including Patriot air defense systems, to help Ukraine fight. He said other countries in NATO (a group of allies) will pay for these weapons, not the U.S. Ukrainian President Zelensky thanked Trump for supporting Ukraine and said they are working together to try to end the fighting and bring peace.

Zelensky also talked with Trump’s helper, Keith Kellogg. Donald Trump said that if Russia doesn’t stop fighting in Ukraine, the United States might put very high taxes (called tariffs) on goods from Russia, like oil. These taxes could be so high that they would make Russian products much more expensive. He also warned that if Russia doesn’t agree to stop fighting within 50 days, the U.S. might also punish people who buy Russian goods.

Some officials said that if Russia doesn’t agree to stop fighting by early September, Russia could face both high taxes and other punishments. This would be a big change because normally, many countries haven’t fully stopped buying Russian oil, which has helped Russia keep earning money.

Trump said that these punishments could include special rules called “secondary sanctions,” which could make it harder for Russia to sell things to other countries. But he didn’t give many details about how exactly they would do this.
