Why Exercise Matters for Gamers and Esports Players

Playing video games is often seen as something people do while sitting in front of a screen for a long time. Unlike sports like football or basketball, esports doesn’t need players to run around on a field. But that doesn’t mean the body isn’t affected.

A recent talk by a physical therapist explains that exercise and gaming might be more connected than many gamers think. The point isn’t that gamers should stop playing. Instead, they can stay healthier by moving around and exercising regularly during the day. Playing competitive games needs a lot of focus, quick thinking, and precise movements.

Gamers often sit in the same spot for hours, looking at the screen and using a mouse, keyboard, or controller. Staying still for too long can hurt the neck, shoulders, and lower back. Even if a gamer sits up straight, sitting in one place for hours can still feel uncomfortable. That’s why it’s good to take breaks and move around.

Gamers can stand up between matches, walk around while getting a drink, or do simple neck and shoulder stretches during breaks. Having a comfy chair, desk, and monitor is important, but sitting still for hours without moving isn’t good even with good posture.

Small habits can help. For example, a gamer can take a short walk before starting to play or stand up after finishing a few matches. These little changes can help prevent sitting for too long. The World Health Organization says it’s important to sit less and move more whenever you can. Can exercise help gamers do better? Researchers are starting to look at whether exercise can make gamers better at their games.

A study from 2026 looked at 10 experiments with 503 esports players. It found that exercise might help improve quick reactions, accuracy, thinking skills, and memory. These skills are important in gaming because players need to think fast, make good choices, and do precise actions. But the research isn’t complete yet.

It’s not true that going to the gym will automatically make someone a better gamer or help them win tournaments. What we know so far is that exercise might help some thinking skills that are useful in gaming. How much exercise do gamers need?

The World Health Organization recommends that adults aged 18 to 64 get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week. They also suggest doing activities that make muscles stronger.
